Welcome & Visitor Center Manager
Job Overview
The Boston Public Art Triennial is seeking a dependable, enthusiastic Welcome & Visitor Center Manager to oversee day-to-day operations of our pop-up Welcome Center, the public hub for our citywide public art exhibition. This 5,000 sq ft storefront will serve as the primary destination for visitors to access exhibition maps, artist information, merchandise, and onsite artwork—including Calls to Action by acclaimed artist Julian Charrière.
The Welcome Center Manager will be responsible for maintaining a welcoming, professional, and organized environment, managing front-of-house staffing and customer service operations, and supporting exhibition and retail engagement. The ideal candidate is experienced in customer-facing or retail roles, thrives in fast-paced environments, and takes pride in making visitors feel at home.
Key Responsibilities
Open and close the Welcome Center reliably according to protocol (Tues–Sun, 11am–7pm)
Serve as the lead onsite staff member, managing day-to-day operations and supervising 1–2 visitor services associates per shift
Greet and orient visitors, providing maps, materials, and guidance for exploring the exhibition
Maintain cleanliness, safety, and organization of the space, including front-of-house, storage, and restrooms
Oversee sales of branded merchandise (tote bags, t-shirts, stickers), including operating POS system, handling cash/card transactions, and managing inventory levels
Ensure accurate visitor tracking, assist with survey distribution, and support evaluation efforts
Train and support part-time staff and volunteers to deliver excellent visitor service
Coordinate with offsite staff for supply needs, scheduling, and reporting issues
Act as a public ambassador for the Triennial and help maintain a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for all
Qualifications
2+ years experience in customer service, retail, hospitality, gallery, or museum environments
Prior supervisory or team lead experience strongly preferred
Comfortable using a point-of-sale system and handling cash and inventory
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Highly dependable, organized, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a small team
Able to work a consistent schedule including weekends and evenings as needed
Interest in contemporary art, design, or public events is a plus
CPR/First Aid training is a bonus
Schedule & Compensation
20–50 hours per week, May 15—November 3, 2025
Hours scheduled across Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:30am and 7:30pm
$20–$25/hour based on experience, plus overtime pay for eligible hours
Paid training provided in mid-May
