Matt Thoms

AUGUST 5, 2024

Matt Thoms illustrates the surprising similarities between public art and startups and how that will aid him in contributing to the Board as one of our newest additions. As co-founder and General Partner at Baukunst, Matt’s ability to identify bold opportunities and counter the resulting risks makes him an outstanding addition to the Board. We talked with him about experimenting with new ideas and sparking community-wide conversations through public art.

What are you most excited to bring to Boston Public Art Triennial by serving on the Board?

I've been working closely with many startups in the Boston area for over a decade and they share a lot in common with public artists: taking big risks, experimenting with new ideas, and creating experiences that shape the cultural conversation. I'm excited to share some of those experiences and bring those two Boston communities closer together as we ramp up for the first Triennial next year.

Why are you passionate about public art and what do you see as its impact on communities?

The arts have always been the best tool we have as a community to showcase our values and spark important conversations. And public art is the best way to bring that directly into our communities and everyday lives without any barriers.

In Boston, we're fortunate to have a diverse range of neighborhoods with their own perspectives to share. The Triennial offers an incredible opportunity to bring folks to new areas of the city and catalyze more conversations and engagement between communities.

What is your favorite public art installation in the last year?

It's tough to choose just one, but I'm really thrilled to see the Portraits of Pride exhibit return again this year in the Seaport. As we celebrate the 20th (!) anniversary of Massachusetts' marriage equality case, it's an incredible reminder both of the diversity of communities here in Boston, but also how we've led the country in crucial social equity reform and can continue to do so.

Anything else you'd like to share?

I want to extend a huge "thank you" to everyone on the Triennial team and Board who's been so kind in welcoming me to the Board. I'm looking forward to a great year ahead of us as we get ready for May 2025!
